I was hired as the new Head Football Coach of my 5A private school on March 17th. The state of Texas was on extended spring break. I had no idea how to navigate a virtual landscape. Since I was leaving college as a football coach and professor I would learn rapidly. I have by no means cracked the code but I can tell you some things that worked really well before we were allowed to have our kids on campus.

    1. We stayed in contact via text, phone, and zoom. I started with a pre-recorded parent meeting video that I sent the link out to.. Then followed up with virtual one on one parent player meetings.

    2. We provided them workouts with the understanding most of them needed their teammates and coaches but there are always self-disciplined kids that will do it.

    3. limited Zoom team meetings time-wise and stayed on task. When it was over we stayed on for “free for all” where the team could just hang out and talk etc.

    4. Lastly, we had basically a whole new staff so we did small virtual meetings. For example, I spent a lot of time with the two quarterbacks. Watching film during zoom, talking through reads, and most importantly bonding with them.
