We definitely would tighten our splits on FB wedge. Most teams did not get into traditional Goal Line defense…6-5, Bears until we got inside the 5. Depending on our film study of their techniques our splits could shrink slightly depending on the plays we would run in those situations.

My thoughts on splits in general is that they are a team by team thing. If I was coaching a Pop Warner team my splits would be tighter than a college team. You need to adjust by size of lineman and their ability to cover 2&3 foot gaps particularly on down blocks. Your players must also understand, particularly the wings, that they must align in a position that allows them to carry out their assignment without tipping off the defense.

Vs. even spacing we might over split the C/G to 3 ft and the G/T split would be 1 ft. Their total split would be 4 ft. This would help with the OT down block on the 3 and also with doubles on the 3. It also gives us more room on trap and also makes the Mike or the 2 ILB’s on the 4-4 uneasy and gives us better angles on them. The TE split is normally 3 ft ,but we would over split him vs. 4-3 /9 technique to widen the Belly/Down hole and give us a better angle on the SAM. The wing to that side would maintain his split 3.5 yards from the OT so he would almost look stacked behind the TE.

Hope this gives you some perspective. Whatever your splits the players must be able to carry out their assignments and the timing of plays especially XX and counters cannot be altered.

This is my first year as a head coach and taking over a program that has not been successful in the last 4 years. I was an assistant coach for the last 8 years for two successful programs. It is a night and day difference in weight room culture from the schools previous to the one I’m at now. My two previous schools had the majority of their athletes in every week and were committed to getting better. Wondering what strategies or things that others have done to get athletes committed in the weight room? I bought a laser timer, jump mat, looking into more branding for our weight room, and am putting up a leader board. I text the guys on group chat and do some leadership lessons with them but nothing seems to work where they are fully committed. Any ideas would be great.

P.S. All our sports are mandatory to lift twice a week so we have admin that are backing us, its the out of season kids that seem to have the lack of motivation and commitment.

I went through the course and really thought your scheme has a great deal to offer our program. I took some notes on your unbalanced short yard formation with the RPO and now I’m trying to go back and review it. I’m struggling to find it. In what part of the course did you go over that unbalanced formation short-yardage package?

Coach, in your system breakdown you talked about your Off-Season. I was wondering if you’d be willing to share what Skill work you do with your Quarterbacks in the Off-Season. Is anybody incorporating Brennan Marion’s Go Go Offense into their offensive structure?

I’m really intrigued by the small amount of information I have, and I’d like to expand my understanding so we could use it with our offense next fall.

The general answer is YES I would always have Jet as part of my package and a major part especially if I was going to be more traditional Wing-T under center. I need it for XX and Jet Reverse and it fits with Belly Slide and my QB Sprint Package and also the counters off of them as well as the 1 step game.

When you talk about a Power Read off Jet in the Gun that’s another aspect of the offense I was heading toward but never did. There are several factors that need to be considered. I’ve known you for years and you are an outstanding and knowledgeable coach about the finer points of the offense so you know what it takes schematically to do it. That;s the first aspect is the knowledge for you and your staff. The next aspect is do you have a QB and surrounding personnel to run it? Are they veterans or newcomers? A coach needs to decide how much the players can absorb. If you were a new coach to the system maybe this would be too much!

The #1 question I always asked is how expensive is this addition? Sometimes other plays may have to go because there just isn’t enough practice time. Did this add fit and complement everything else we were doing? As I said we were a Jet Sweep- Buck Sweep- Belly Slide team with Play Action and RPO’s off those and a Quick Game (1&3 step) and Sprint game to complement. We did have some 5 step drop (3 step after snap in Gun) for (2&3 and long). We were not a great Screen team which I would do more of if still coaching. My last 2 QB’s were great passers but not runners and that also dictates your philosophy.

We base our six man pressures off of what we see from the offense. We usually give our linebackers options on the where the blitz is orientated. I also use a strike concept where I am looking for a specific formation to strike with specific blitz. If they do not show that formation we kill the blitz and play coverage. What’s Bucksweep.com

So, for now. We haven’t really used many from 2×2 just because teams don’t over compensate much where we know where they’re going to be so to speak or how they’re going to defend us. We like it from 3×1 because usually we get our best WR 1 on 1 backside and the defense has to make some choices. We then pick the best play based on their choice. Against 2×2 we aren’t as likely to be in that scenario.

Yes, the center IDs the Mike for his combo block so we know which FSLB we are pushing to. The remaining lineman work from that and then call their combo blocks. In all seriousness we over communicate even and I tell them to even point so we don’t mess up. So we point on run and pass even. It’s all about not making errors.
